Advance Care Planning in Nanaimo

Something We all Need to Think About

It’s hard to know what tomorrow will bring – and when it comes to our health care needs, well … most of us believe we will remain healthy until we die – or at least we hope we will. But what if we don’t? What if things change? What if they change so much that you can no longer communicate your wishes?

Who do you want to speak for you when you can no longer speak for yourself? At Nanaimo Hospice, we have learned that when advance care planning conversations occur, families are better prepared.

Nanaimo Hospice understands that life can change quickly. We believe that, as adults, we are never too young to start thinking about this important issue and we encourage individuals and families to “have the conversation”. We are here to help educate our community. Here are some of the ways we can help:

    • Visit our hospice library and read more about this important issue. Pick up the “how to” booklet, My Voice - Advance Care Planning Guide, and ask for help when you need it. This booklet is also available here.
    • Hospice volunteers have put together a special presentation and are available to present to community groups and small gatherings.
    • Hospice volunteers are available to talk one-on-one in special circumstances, and can support you in building a plan for yourself.
    • Stay tuned and watch this website for upcoming educational opportunities and other programs related to advance care planning.
    • Go to and find out about other programs offered through Hospice in Nanaimo.
